MUSIC PROGRAM

St Paul's has a long history of excellent music with significant contributions to secular and sacred music. Professional musicians have been employed here since the late 19th century, and one of the Episcopal Church's most distinguished hymn writers, Howard Chandler Robins, served as Rector from 1905-1911. More recently John Harms, founder of what is now the Bergen Performing Arts Center, served as Organist and Choirmaster in the mid-twentieth century.

PARISH CHOIRS

St Paul’s Choir is a semi-professional ensemble of singers who provide choral leadership at the 10:30 am Eucharist and other major festivals throughout the academic year. Our repertoire ranges from chant to Renaissance motets, Anglican anthems, gospel and spirituals, and more. The Choir sings three Sundays per month as well as holy days and concerts with orchestra. New members are always welcome, and sight-reading is recommended. Rehearsals are Thursdays, 7:30-9:30 pm

Youth Choir is composed of children in grades 3 through 6. This Choir leads the music at the 10:30 a.m. Sunday Eucharist once a month during the academic year. They lead the 5 pm Christmas Eucharist and the Great Vigil of Easter liturgy. Rehearsals are Sunday mornings after the Eucharist. During the 2011-12 year, we will form a choir for middle and high school students. This ensemble will sing at various services throughout the year.

The mission of St Paul’s youth music program is to:

Summer Choir is a group of volunteers who gather at 9:45 am on Sunday mornings to learn an anthem for the 10:30 am Eucharist. Anyone who can read music—of any age—is welcome to join us! Simply arrive in time for the rehearsal and remain for the 10:30 am liturgy. There’s no requirement to sing every Sunday, so you can come one time or many times. Our first Sunday is June 19.

MUSIC AT ST PAUL'S CONCERT SERIES

Music has been an important part of the mission and outreach of St. Paul's Episcopal Church for nearly 150 years. Our historic sanctuary continues to serve as a place of prayer and respite of beauty for the residents of the greater Englewood area and beyond.

In addition, we are delighted to offer a series of programs highlighting local singers, instrumentalists, and choirs in a welcoming, sacred space. The 2010-11 series included the Merton College Choir from Oxford, the Mack Brandon Quartet, the Monticelli Cello Trio, Soprano Willsonia Boyer and our own St Paul’s Choir. Suggested donation for each event is $15; $10 for students and seniors. Your gifts and donations help defray the cost of each program. Free parking is available and a reception follows each program. The series will resume this fall, and information will be available at the end of the summer.
